JULY SUNRISE

JULY SUNRISE

Step back.

The orange sun is sliding

southerly. Soon the summer

birds will slip away, too,

following the light.

And you?

Ah, the shadows,

the silence.

How many years to learn

to love them: the hollows

left in nests, the spaces left

by fallen leaves?

I enjoyed this one and sent it to a friend who, along with me, bemoans the lack of bird song in August.
